2003 Moaning Caverns
Up

On March 21, 2003, the Troop headed to Vallecito, CA for camping, hiking, rappelling & spelunking at Moaning Caverns. The photos below were taken on Saturday, March 22nd. We woke up Sunday morning with it raining. Have you every used a garbage bag for a rain coat?

Saturday morning and it's time to get started.

For some, it is a bit too early...

The first trail we try comes to an abrupt dead-end. Anyone want to dive into this canyon?

After 2 false starts, we find a good hiking trail. These scouts wanted to investigate some of the nearby rocks.

During a 10 mile hike, some Scouts get ahead. We use radios to keep in touch. (Watch your step, it's a long way down.)

After hiking 5 miles, it's time for a little rest and some lunch.

The rappelling Scouts have to get into gear and listen to a safety talk. (Why does this take so long? I just want to jump in.)

Last one in is a rotten egg! (Way too dark to take pictures inside the cave.)

Everyone made it out of the cave. Time to cook dinner. Yo! Watch out for the hamburger grease... Are you making "Blackened Burgers"?

What camping trip would be complete without a campfire? It's even good when you get a little smoke in your eyes.
